Europe’s farmers are on the frontlines of climate change, facing more frequent droughts, floods, and extreme weather events that threaten food production and rural livelihoods.
The RAINS project is developing and testing 10 practical solutions to help agriculture adapt, from alternative water sources like fog harvesting and reclaimed wastewater to smart irrigation tools such as WaterIQ and Optifangs-IA.
Across 10 demonstration sites in Spain and Greece, RAINS is improving water efficiency, nutrient management, and soil resilience, helping farmers use water and fertilisers more sustainably.
By 2050, RAINS aims to:
- 💧 Improve water efficiency by 50% on 12,700 hectares
- 🚜 Support 500+ farmers
- 🌍 Save €6.1 billion, 244 million litres of water, and 35 tonnes of CO₂
Coordinated by SAV and involving 17 partners across 6 countries, RAINS demonstrates what works on the ground in the Mediterranean, the EU’s most drought-prone region, setting a credible pathway to help farmers use water and fertilisers more efficiently and sustainably, while influencing agricultural policies and farming practices across the EU.
